Sense- What is the work expressing
The posters expressing there is a woman on the front meaning she is the main character. Wax all over her body conveys she was physical attacked where someone waxed her until she cant move as wax stiffens. Her face facing the front could mean she was placed in that position by someone. I believe she’s outside as I can see the rain falling above her. She could be hanging off something because her hair is hanging, also the droplets of wax that have dried up is hanging too. The three words in a colour ‘Prey Slay Display’ is expressing what the movies about. There’s a predator targeting innocent people, in addition there is more than one person in the movie because of the name credits in a row at the top of the poster. The word ‘Slay’ suggests certainly a vulgar vile violent murder is going to be taken place, as that’s already vivid as seen the eyes have been taken out. The word ‘Display’ could be an example of the woman in the poster meaning the waxed body could be dumped anywhere but not hidden unlike some other horror films. Implying the predator is very careless, ruthless, not shameful and crazy. The colour of the title implies the colour of the wax being green. The contrast is a dark to a light green which has a kind of glow, conveys there is a light-hearted calm scene. The woman’s hair on the left side of the poster looks neat and fresh this conveys she hasn’t been dead for long or maybe murdered in that moment.
Audience – Who is the intended audience? What makes you think this?
In my perspective ‘House Of Wax’ seem is pretty much everything in a very good horror movie. It seems creepy and freaky seeing the murdered woman that looks were genuine and realistic looking unlike those supernatural films. So in this case the audience age would be 18 and over, as younger viewer would probably get paranoid where this movie would seem so real. The older audience would be so overwhelmed of the movie because of the cinematography is fascinating. Also the main image is a picture of a naked women with wax dripping off her. This would appeal to teenage boys more because it is a naked women and the two of the five main actors actresses that are starring in the film are, ‘Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton’. Theses two actresses will appeal more to the teenage boys to watch it because they would see them as two attractive women.
Technique – What are the specific techniques used? How will you apply these to your piece?
Looking at the image that has been used, to make people aware of that’s what the film is about. To make it stand out a black background has been used as the is little bit of what looks like rain drops to imply the setting of the film is outside. The overall colour for the poster are dark colours to show the audience that it is doing to be dark scenes as I associate dark colours with hell and death The eyes have been darkened to make it look a horror film and also the women looks human and has melting wax over her body. This makes it look like a horror because it is like she has been waxed alive and because she is outside as-well. Obviously it’s is a sign of murder the way the women is laid like she had fallen to the ground unexpectedly. The title has been in normal a normal font but a bold text, this is to say this movie is natural. The colour that has been used is a colour you see when you have lit a candle and it has hardened up. The use of the tagline is a rhyming to make it seem that the film has a bit of comedy on as well as it being a horror. The way they have used the words and put a fill stop after each one makes it more punchy and more effective because the audience will see it and will wonder what is going on and will want to find out.
intent – What is the piece trying to do? Is it successful?
It’s showing the woman was at a vulnerable situation before she was murdered. The colours of the poster is trying to tell the audience the main theme of the movie is to do with wax as the main image of the woman is covered in wax and the title is green to show the colour of the wax, therefore this is successful because it’s telling the audience target what the movie is based on. The date ‘May 6’ is in bold white capital letters deliberately to make it stand out from the green, especially its at the very bottom from the name credits to show its not apart of the movie, but to let the audience know the release date, which makes it successful as its not the same colour as the rest of the poster. The black background shows a sense of lost no way out and danger, where this is successful to give an insight of the film.
Personal – What is your opinion on this?
What I like about the poster is the colours of green and black contrast, even though there both dark colours yet both still stand out. I like how the green glows out of the back as I feel the poster is reflecting on when a candle is lit in the dark it glows. So this looks like a shine of light is light on the woman as I can see that reflection at the top of the woman. I like how The title glows from a dark green to a light green in juxtaposition suggesting there is a light and dark scenes in the film. I would like to add this technique in my poster but the colours being dark grey and light grey. I like the way the main characters names are displayed at the top of the poster as this will defiantly intrigue the audience or fans of these names as there is some well known names starring in the movie. However I don’t like the three sub headings ‘Pray, Slay,Display; as I feel the font and the colour needs to m=be moire powerful, because the words looks like it’s just hiding. In addition for people with bad eye sight might not be able to read this so it would bypass them therefore they would be missing an important message in this poster.
Sense – What is the work expressing?
This poster is about a horror film called mirrors. It has some typical features of a horror poster genre. The colours have the usual general idea of what a normal horror poster could have such as; the dark colours and a pale human face. The posters main attentions that draws the audience that seems to be half of the face of a screaming woman, her eyes very wide to convey the expression of shock, frightened, startled; this implies danger because the background is black which makes the poster more scary and eerie. To implie that something sinister is out to probably murder the woman Its a clever a and put reflections in the eyes which suggests that the face in the poster is looking into mirrors; the hint of the film title. This makes the colour of the red title red stand out. You can only see half of the mouth, like the mouth was being pulled seems to be emerging from the darkness behind her. her eyes are wide open showing fear and terror suggesting she is being tortured in some way. there is always a tint or red smeared across her face which has connotations of blood and violence. the title is also red which conveys blood. this emphasises the the film is about mirrors as the second ‘R’ is is reflected back from the other ‘R’ as a mirror would.
Audience – Who is the intended audience? What makes you think this?
The audience for a horror is for people 18 and over-25. The most reason for this is that young adults and youths enjoy thrills. These thrills are more likely to excite a younger audience rather older people. In addition young audiences are also less likely to being put off the film by violence or unnatural images which may make older audience feel negative towards the film.
Techniques–
The black background has that connotations of danger where I like how it has that blending tool effect in with her face black has the most powerful, dramatic, death and expensive presence, therefore I will be applying this technique in my poster, that’s to make my face in the stand to highlight the details out which is the main focus. Also the director of another famous film ‘The hills have eyes’ its a very clever way that will attract fans of that movie to go and seed this film ‘Mirrors’. On the left side the girl has blood smeared on her face, a great technique to add in my poster more of a red hue as will stand out from the black and grey. Her eyes are wide open of an expression of shock, in addition to this I will be using this technique a different way of my wide eyes but the colour in side will be a whitish blue to make it more demonic. The use of use fonts with it is gothic, thin, with sharp ends probably to convey how mirrors actually are; what the impact of the movie would be like.
Intent – What is the piece trying to do? Is it successful?
The poster is showing that the girl is vulnerable, gives the audience a clue that she is the main character; maybe gets murdered. Her facial expression tells us she’s terrified. I shows that the film is going to be a dark setting showing by the background of the poster. It seems like she’s looking into the mirror and she sees something terrifying, her position of her face is front ways, appearing at the mirror, as-well as both ‘R’s in the title is reflecting as a mirror. The mirrors could gives a sense of disillusionment. The middle of the eyes reflect the mirror if.

Personal opinion
Overall I really like the style of this poster, it has a high and low contrast, as this really brings the mystery out in the poster intriguing me to watch the film. It makes me think what is happening in the present moment of the person such as, she could be probably sat some where in a dark place, with a bandage wrapped round her mouth it’s seen to been open wide but a light above of her head or a torch towards her face as I could see streaks of white light in her dark brown iris, where this is a contrast too. Maybe this person had been dragged unexpectedly into the mirror but cant see what as around her face has been covered in blackness, but the top of her head is left in the mirror.
Sense – What is the work expressing?
This Unfriended poster horror poster convention because they have chosen to use a dark and ominous colour scheme. The face is also in black and white to show a sense of confusion and a loss of life. On top of her screaming mouth expression which definitely expresses the fear that the film is trying to portray, looks like a screen has that static effect makes me predict because she was filming herself then realised she was in danger therefore her facial expression shows that shes terrified. The date of release is also highlighted in its own unique red colour. This was a good use of colour as red is stereo-typically known to represent blood, gore and violence. They have used modern technology to create a new film this is to see an inside perspective of how social media can be dangerous. To show this typed in the search bar of a name of a person shows it’s based online. This also shows this person who is being searched is known negatively by the words about her life such as: ‘suicide, bullied, possession’. Also her information is out openly to the public even though she is dead. This also implies the happened in the pass as she has left an impact on people enough for the public to search her up. This could be reflecting back on what happened to her being the girl above.
Audience – Who is the intended audience? What makes you think this?
This movie is intended for the ages 15 and over. I say this because its a horror so younger young are not able to watch this where as the age that is suitable all have social media and all go online. Some people might be able to relate to this movie as many people In today’s society people are on social media and there is revenge coming across it commonly so it’s put out there that the movie is to do with the social side than the physical side which is in most movies.
Technique – What are the specific techniques used? How will you apply these to your piece?
Not only they have used part of a face on the poster, but have use an image of a search bar taken from google images this has so much information giving the audience clues, predicting many ways what the film is about. Mostly the colour is used in the poster being the primary colour. Grey is neither positive nor negative, as this implies confusion and loss of distinction. The red potent tag line for this poster is “this April, revenge comes online” this connotes that the main character is trying to take revenge on this person in the poster as they have done bad to them the meaning of revenge. I like the red sub text that i’m thinking of using it in my poster as this poster has a similar setting to mine having a grey face and black background, I would be intriguing to see some red in there therefore i’m going to use this technique. The word ‘April’ shows its defiantly going to happen and that the person is determine to get their revenge in the movie, or it’s to inform the audience on when the film comes out. But it’s confusing to tell because it doesn’t have a release date number which makes me think it could be apart of the actual film. Using the words “online” connotes that social networking will be used and shown in this film. Using the words “online” connotes that social networking will be used and shown in this film. The title is in capital letters which connotes that this is vital is to the poster and its important for the audience to know the name the film.
Intent – What is the piece trying to do? Is it successful?
The poster is trying to intrigue the audience with the red sub text ‘This April revenge comes online, and with the screaming moth expression. As the audience we do not know what this is, this entices the audience in and makes them want to watch the film. The denotations of this film poster are the fact that it’s a web search and half of the text has been typed, which makes the audience wonder who that person is, and why is there negative search headings about her? What happened to this person? This would defiantly engage the audience. The connotes of the web search bar are that it involves using social media telling the audience a very modern setting and up to date film.
Also having a name in the search bar connotes that this persona is the main character also including different words which relate to this persona also informs the viewer about things which made her want to take her own life, finding out so early on that this person commit suicide connotes that it is important to the story line of this film. Colour scheme The colours used for this poster are red, black and white. Dark red which is featured in this poster connotes anger rage and strong power. White connotes goodness and often used because it is a neutral colour. Black also connotes dangers and evil. Using these three colours make it clear to the audience that this film is about dark emotions. What I will take away from this poster I like how they haven’t used a photo of the main character but instead hinted towards who they are. In my own poster I am thinking about using a object such as a touch or something which relates to the plot. another think is that they haven’t shown the age rating. I also like how they have used words instead of numbers for the release date.
Personal – What is your opinion on this?
Its a powerful way to convey how she’s feeling in the poster just by showing her mouth. The colours used for this poster are red, black and white. Dark red which is featured in this poster connotes anger rage and strong power which I really like. White connotes often used because it is a neutral colour. Black also connotes dangers and evil. Using these three colours make it clear to the audience that this film is about dark emotions, as I find this helpful to get a sense of the film. What I will take away from this poster of the main character but instead hinted towards who they are. In my own poster I am thinking about using a object such as a touch or something which relates to the plot. another think is that they haven’t shown the age rating. I also like how they have used words instead of numbers for the release date.
Final poster
This movie poster I created is a horror genre, I got all the inspiration of the 4 horror poster I analysed. I got the black background from all the posters as this really intrigued me to utilise this colour as I knew I was going to create a face in the centre, as I got this idea from ‘UNFRIENDED’ in addition to using a whole face than half a face. I created this by a tutorial on Youtube for inspiration. So I decided to use it, to create the image firstly photo of my whole face, then using Photoshop. Then getting the skeleton of Google then I edited the image by merging them both which was easy.
The image of Google
After the I moved to the eye part. To make it clear I used the Eyedropper tool to select persific objects. This was a difficult task because the eye wasn’t turning red. To get that eye blurred with no iris showing effect, the colour had to turn red which was quiet a long process.
Finannally I managed to turn the eye red. This is the outcome result I was looking for on the eft side and this is the process on the right hand side.
The title of my poster ‘CHILLING VISIONS’ the font being capital letters because its important to the poster relating to the eyes the way it the colour as a chilling effect and the eyes have vision. So thats how I came up with the name. The font gives it that death effect with pointy edges emphasising it.
Final Evaluation
At the start of this project I wrote my proposal, stating I was going to make a horror movie poster. Overall I believe the poster is fascinating, what I’ve accomplished; converting my human face into a gory skeleton.
That came from the features from my secondary research. I think this was one of the most successful aspects of my work as I produce this masterpiece independently. The secondary research really helped me produce an outstanding poster and how I wanted it to specifically look by researching images of horror posters, searching what affects emphasise horror posters. As for my Primary research I feel as if it did help me a little bit to get an inside perspective of other popular posters. I followed the target as much to intrigue my specific audience. I ended up following the responses of the secondary research more than the primary because I am a visual person as I like to see the beauty in front of me than to hear it. What was very useful is the video tutorial, where it helped me a lot in detail. Overall, I do think that i stuck to the ideas I gathered from my research as I had vivid idea of my poster.
I said this at the beginning that this was my favourite genre out of all I could possibly choose from, also I wanted to create a unique poster with a name that connects to the poster called ‘chilling visions’ meaning the eyes that are the colour of a clear airy light colour which links to the word chilling; and visions because the eyes are the higher contrasts of the poster. However this was a difficult process to complete, furthermore the grey colour of the eye wasn’t real what I had in mind, but the process being difficult I didn’t was to tamper with it to make any errors therefore I left it how it is, but this would be the thing I would improve on. In my opinion the eyes is a main eye-catching feature and now i have completed all my research and the poster itself. The font that i settled with clearly fits with the sub genre of found footage horror. I feel that the font helps create an idea of how the film would play out if it were real, which is why i think the font that I chose really helped the success of the poster.
