Unit 5 Investigating audio production and technology

You will analyse and discuss the use of sounds in two different media products. These can be from films, animations or video games. (1000 words)

Sound in advertising

The Toyota car brand is being advertised. The voice in the advert is a man and a woman the tone is full of energy very clear but in a fast pace, the purpose of this is to explain details of the brand what they’re selling but in a short amount of time of 40 seconds so people don’t get bored. They’re doing it like a quiz show where the man is asking the woman questions, therefore, the woman has to answer before the time run out in order. There is an FX like something played at a quiz show. The last question is referring to a Toyota ‘What is a blue moon’ and she advertises the Toyota car what benefits come with it. Also, he replies with more details. It’s ineffective because its too fast, therefore, people would bypass the advert and take no interest in it.

The Clinique advert is a woman talking in a soft clear tone. Stating how women in the morning can’t find clothes to wear. Then there’s a shift in the present moment, of the other woman talking about the cause of clothes being ‘too big’, too tight’, ‘soo last season’, ‘boring’ this is effective because woman can relate to that and creates a negative aspect of the whole morning routine, before the foundation gets included. However, on the other hand, the positive words used such “Always a perfect fit”, “Breathable”, “Comfortable”, “Fresh”, “Superfit”, “Skins favourite” introducing the ‘Clinique foundation super-fit’ then saying to the woman you can’t go wrong with this foundation. Also, there is a low sound of upbeat music playing this is so the music doesn’t overpower the voice.

The beginning of the Nintendo advert there’s a well know jingle as this would get people attention. There’s a woman talking in a normal pace introducing the new technology gadget which is the ‘brand new 2DS’  also explaining the benefits that you can play the 3DS games on the new gadget as well without the 3D effect. What colours are available to intrigue the audience more. As well as advertising Argos this is beneficial and for the brand, more people would buy them, that you get two free games if the gadgets bought from this shop. There’s a piece of nice happy music playing in the background.

– Diegetic meaning not been edited in /non diegetic sounds has been edited in?

How do they affect the scene? What is the director trying to do and how?
– The music/lyrics – What is the relevance in the scene?

Sounds:
– Fading in and out
– How loud they are?
– Low pitch/high pitch?
– What do they remind you of?
– Are they calming/alarming/confusing? etc.

Black panther

Sound enhances the imaginary world, it can provide depth, establish character and environment, introduce a new scene or cue the viewer to important information.

The non Diegetic sound of music for Black Panther was some of the most unique ideas that I have heard in a Marvel film.  The majority of this was credited to the nature of Black Panther‘s comic story being the background of main character T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and his Wakandan roots, all of which intrigued for something outside of the traditional instrument set.

The composer Ludwig Göransson pushed the more than his ability being diligent with experimentation; by taking a month off to visit Senegal. He has worked with director Ryan Coogler on all of his films give in knowledge from a university library or look at YouTube videos: He spent a month in Africa. As he said”I knew the only way I could do this was to go to Africa and do research. I took a month off and travelled to Senegal.”

The fascination with the ‘talking drum which is a West African instrument that was used as a communication device as you can hold it under your arm and press down on it to change the pitch, allowing it to act as a voice. Furthermore, the amazing instrument was of T’Challa was led by six ‘talking drums’  I watched the film 4 times I was still overjoyed to hear rich flavours of African tribal drums, vocals, and other ethnic instruments tied into the soundscape throughout.

An example I found particularly interesting was when N’Jadaka/Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) first confronted T’Challa; rather than using strings or low horns to build tension, in alternatively a percussion pattern rising in pitch (the talking drum) that perfectly emphasised the scene whilst still maintaining that African flair.

To create the tremendous sound of the city they used elements, of course, they used
technology, that was all sound design. creating loads of technology sounds, and the idea was that they should be simultaneously high-tech and a bit musical but be potentially rooted in something organic and African. For example, some of the air ships and trains you hear would have these very high-tech elements to them but the signature sound of them going by was made from an African bird slowed way down. So we tried to approach a lot of things that way.

How they create these organic-based high-tech sounds the equipment they haver been using are the Native Instruments Kontakt as a ways as layering and pitch manipulation. There’s clearly a new Synclavier software. If we had a science sound that used to be working truely well but just needed some thing extra that used to begenerally where these factors got here from either that or pitch-manipulated animals and birds.

The sound for Black Panther was once the craftsmanship of the almighty Skywalker Sound. Staring in several of Marvel’s films before, together withThor: Ragnarok, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Skywalker Sound are wellrecognized in the Marvel universe, and can usually be successful a exceptional sounding movie.

Several of over and over audio favourites for me in the sound diagram was once the sounds of the dispersion of kinetic energy from Black Panther’s suitand Klaw’s sonic emitter. The factors mixed resonated beautifully at some point of the cinema and made for some impactful, warm, and well textured waves of sound. Any use or presence of vibranium in the movie had this samenicely flavoured sonic texture that definitely pushed via the mix, and I foundmy ears intrigued to it every time. Some of my preferred scenes for audio have been the temple garden, and the delicate drips and plant tears seeping in and out of the ambience. This introduced out the meditative feeling in me, through these scenes.

The second was once a unique moment in the science lab when the common song wasn’t playing. In addition, there was once an fascinatingnearly synthetic room tone pulsing beneath that helped to fill the soundscape however additionally preserve on to that abstract technological vibe. There used to be an extra scene that mirrored this when N’Jadaka and T’Challa fall down on to the educate track, and that transitional duration as they fall thruthe underground and previous the lab had that equal kind of ambience, like a looming feel of isolation.

It felt so actual with there advent fight of sequences and moments wherespears and shields have been colliding have been very loud I could sense the vibration of the sounds merging with my body.  As a reason of possibly to be the responsibility of the cinema’s extent and audio setup, as hostile to the movie mix swell. There have been occasions where this sharpness felt crucial to reduce through the wall of textures in some of the extra severechase or fight scenes, but a good deal of the time. There had been a few moments where I felt as if a team of characters have been not all quitepositioned in the equal space, and this can also simply be down to the differences between vocal tones and frequencies.

Overall, Black Panther is definitely in my pinnacle few preferred Marvel movies, chiefly for having one of the extra diverse storylines and a outstanding dynamic throughout; both in the audio and the story. For once, I felt like the emphasis of the plot used to be more on personalitydevelopment and building the identity and the significance of Wakanda and its history. The soundtrack was one of my favourites in the film particularlyKendrick Lamar and different afrobeats. “It’s now not a funeral,” the awfulman sneers, and abruptly we’re being pummelled through Opps, a throbbing, darkly futuristic hip-hop tune by way of a trio of rappers led via Kendrick Lamar, who put collectively the movie’s all-star soundtrack and appears on each of its 14 songs. The sound excelled at bringing the story of Wakanda to life.

A quiet place

I can describe this movie in one word, a horror of silence. Its too interesting as not a single word is spoken in this movie. The family communicates to one another through sign language. No dialogue is spoken in this sequence but there is also a minimal amount of music and Foley.  Hearing small shifts in a character’s body, or the slight step of a foot on the ground. The entire film is mainly pure silence. The tension that this level of quiet creates feels almost physical. Now knowing what this film is about whenever I would hear a sound it would make me feel tense just knowing  these creatures could turn p t any moment;  while the creatures are blind they are still able to track down the source of any and all sounds.

Within the first five minutes, the first loud non-Diegetic sound is when a boy the youngest of the family, when he’s about to play with his rocket ship toy to play with it. Before the boy is able to play with it, his father removes the batteries and makes him leave the toy behind. As the family begins to leave, the boy’s older sister gives him the toy and it’s batteries back. After giving the toy she leaves him with nothing but a simple gesture, signalling him to be quiet. Furthermore returns it on to play with it as this makes  boisterous noise, what feels like the loudest noise on the planet. Therefore he gets killed by a mortifying alien right in front of his families eyes.

This made me not wanting to move very much, so I don’t break the science. This gave the impression in a virtual reality with the film. But it was uncomfterable for me to do that as-well as eating my popcorn. It was hard to keep quite thought as that the longest silence I’ve kept, part from when I’m sleeping.

Throughout, the use of diegetic sound is stunning. A Quiet Place‘s soundscape is tranquil, hearing the sound of nature, rushing water from a stream, footsteps on sand, the creak of sound of a floorboard as they walk on while the fear is amongst being silent for infinity. The tension builds from the shrieked attacks of the creatures, in result of the jump scare. A non-diegetic is from an inside perspective, from the daughter who if deaf  to harness her ability to hear her dad creates a hearing-aid and, using sonically allows the audience to hear what she experiences at the same time we see what’s lurking behind her, which is very dynamic.

Advert advertising plan

Our preliminary design for our radio advert is to create a make a enjoyable lip gloss commercial. To start our planning procedure we shared our thought to create an concept plan.
Some ideas we got here up with were:
As a result we got here up with youths intrigued by an ASMR video of the lip gloss in the playground and then looking to buy it
Inspired Rimmel London advert with the signature “get the London look” kind slogan with all exceptional female pronouncing how they love carrying this lip gloss
Another notion where a relatable female is in a panic rush where she cants complete her appear due to the fact she can’t find her trusty lip gloss.
We all agreed that the ASMR playground advert would be the great advert to create as we can all relate to the teens in the commercial as well, we think that having a popular, cutting-edge vogue like ASMR would relate to our target audience between the ages of  13-18.

Lip Gloss Commercial

Instead of putting the sound of the advert up, I wanted to be more spontaneous by creating a poster to advertise the lip gloss and the outcome of when its applied to the lips, to intrigue the audience more. Firstly to create the poster I went on Photoshop. Then to combine the advert and the poster together I used Premiere Pro.

We came up with the thought to make a cosmetic radio advert as we thinking that we could relate to the young target audience we have been making an attempt to approach. We collaborated unique thoughts for beauty products like: mascara, blush, and foundation however we decided to go with a lip gloss as lip gloss has an benefit of variety; we had the thinking that we could embed an ASMR part in the middle of our business as this trend is clearly popular at this moment. So as soon as we had decided what we desired to make, we created a plan. This plan consisted of a script, where we set the radio advert and what goal target market we were aiming towards.
Personally, I notion our plan used to be a top idea. As a result of us sharing our ideas, we made a fabulous idea. We assume that our concept was exact as we could reference our initial beauty radio plan and then compare it to how professional make theirs to see if we find inspiration to improve our radio add.
The advert is situated in a playground involving a conversation with a few of young girls, therefore we all participated in the voice performing in our commercial. I edited the script to make it sound more professional and put in emotive words to get a sense of feeling the emotions when trying on the lip gloss. If we were to do this again I would advise that one would take charge of operating the recording machine while the rest of was on the mike, to make the time quicker.  This outcome will drastically enhance the quality of our radio advert where the amount of time would be taken into consideration too. Also I would pan out roles for everyone so their no confusion and not rushed, as I felt that this task was rushed because people didn’t have different roles. So the ASMR I would choose to record again. This time it would have more of an emotional tone to sense how this produce makes people feel. Also I would have liked the script to be longer.

Amelie video

Amelie/Unit 5 Evaluation (500 words)

I actually owned all of the roles.  Because it would be a long process if I did it in groups also and I still had to get other work completed too. So Yes I did it by my self because part from typing, its the easiest task to do; to record my voice as I’m actually speaking fluent french in this, but i used Google translate to help me translate the words correctly as I wanted this to sound professional. I would say that I’m okay pronouncing French because I learnt it for several years, as-well as doing an impression of a deep voice was quite difficult because I have a high tone voice.  This took about an hour to write out a full script and to pronounce it correctly. To do this I replayed the video multiples of times to see his facial expression how he’ feeling and thinking then what the next scene leads to. Where the protagonist is walking along a market the 28 seconds later there is a shift where he is cutting chicken and eating it. Therefore I came up with an idea script of this man monologue being

  • walking along the market

‘What a beautiful day today’

‘Now wheres the chicken I buy for tomorrows dinner’

Then i connected it together to make sense of he was impatient so he cooked it. deciding to cut it up i’ve added non-diegetic sounds of meat cutting to make it sound real.

Furthermore he ate pieces until there was none left for tomorrows dinner. So he went out to the market again to buy another chicken. meanwhile he was walking he heard the phone box ring.

Then this box brought back memories of when he was young, which was emotional for him so I add a sad melancholic instrumental to fit in the emotions and as music always emphasise the emotions. I only used music if it was a light-hearted, emotional, setting. But did not use it in loud or quiet talkative setting or an important setting like when he goes to pick up the phone in the letter box, because it would over-empower that specific scene to get the informative situation.

Also I was a voiceover, an editor, and a script writer. It was helpful where the actions from the different scenes were bold enough to explain what was going on, that’s what I did. In fact I didn’t even play the version with sound in, this is because I wanted to imagine from my own perspective, without any ideas coming from the true source. I added subtitles because for those who don’t know French it translates to what their saying.

What I could improve on is putting a FX sound of a whistle in 2.00 as I notice I missed that part after when I downloaded it. So it would be more complete.

Well the rest of unit 5 has help me a lot than i would thought of, because I know more technical words to describe different sounds, also to think about the sound to be added to make my final project more fascinating. Like in the task anylsing the sound and  Sound in advertising is really powerful because I would plan out sound, the script, editing and voice, more effectively in my films, things to think about what would engage my audience.

Overall, my work came out successfully because my independence knowing exactly how I wanted to develop it, being efficient on creating sounds. I would do this again for a project.
