Unit 4 Critical and contextual awareness in creative media production

Whiplash Scene Genre Horror

So why did I chose a horror genre?

My genre would be a horror and how I have converted that Whiplash scene because i love the excitement of getting scared, i like the suspense of there is something alluring about not actually knowing what happens next. It could be a complete plot twist, or it could be exactly what the i would suspect to happen predicting it; such as: a specific character gets killed, they get trapped, they go to a place, that characters demonic. It makes me think on a deeper level. When the suspenseful climax finally falls, i’m feeling different emotions i could feel completely mind-blown, upset, mad, or in some cases, happy. Fan base and that increases that spark conversations and debates for the amount of  horror stories have in media is insane. There are so many topics fans can talk about, whether it is the plotline, the ending, the characters, the theories, or even the things they did not like.

The abusive director continues to humiliate him and the young man starts to cry. The director teases him how hes crying, slaps him and he forces the young man to say “im upset!” he demands him to say it louder and keeps slapping him. The young boys face starts to turn into this weird shape forming a face at the back of his skull with sharp jagged teeth, 4 red eyes sunken hollow eyes His flesh on his body starts degrading his bones and intestines is vivid in front on the director; he couldn’t believe his eyes what he was seeing, watching this young man convert into this image of a Grimm; his mouth and eyes open wide he was startled. He took a few steps back away bumping into a piano. The other students

While in the midst of a horror movie, you have two options. Option 1: be too afraid to even think of possible outcomes. Or, option 2: create possible scenarios and attempt to work out every possible angle (the anxiety of not knowing is probably eating you alive). The audience is influenced to attempt to think of the outcomes or plot twists or even create new theories and ways to ignite a conversation regarding the piece of horror. Also It has a lasting impact on the audience.

If you have ever been to the screening of a scary movie, exiting the theater and looking at the faces of those around you quite possibly defines why horror is the best genre around. You can tell who the horror movie aficionados are and who the uncomfortable apprehensive “fans” are. These movies and other pieces of horror impact the audience by showing the cruel and disturbing ideas film writers create in order to influence the audience’s psyche.

All in all, horror movies are one of the biggest sites of revenue in the box offices. Fans are always hungry for new and creative horror stories, and once they come out the fans devour them.

Charlie Chaplin | O Garoto analysis

I watched a film called The Kid  in 1921 it was written, produced and directed by Charlie Chaplin, also himself starring in the film. A well known American silent comedy drama film back in the day.

Chaplin began filming on July 31st 1919; where as filming ended on July 30, 1920 and all post-production work finished on December 29th 1920. Chaplin spent $500,000 and made so much commitment in 18 months to The Kid, which was shot around his Hollywood studio as well as on locations in Los Angeles, Universal City, Pasadena, and Eagle Rock. The casts are as The Man, The Woman, The Tramp and The Policeman, in the drama.

Many can see a very strong influence of the classic lifestyle of a lower class citizen with economic struggles throughout the film. This was Chaplin’s first feature film and was a huge success when it was released, making it the second highest grossing film in 1921. As the audience, first introduced to the mother played by (Edna Purviance) who abandons her new born baby. The unwanted baby then ends up in the arms of The Tramp played by Charlie Chaplin and as he grows more comfortable and familiar to him, the kid (Jackie Coogan) is named Jack. While watching the film, I thought an interesting scene to analyse would be the part towards the end where The Country Orphan Asylum takes Jack away as an attempt to bring him back to his (now very wealthy) birth mother. To me, this scene showed such emotion and triggered a powerful sense in the viewer, I think it’s an important scene to take into consideration.

In terms of the scene, the position of the actors and camera placement, Chaplin uses a pretty classic yet very effective form of composition. As the officers walk in, I see them as the leader and little Jack sitting on the bed as the background. I think this composition creates a strong atmosphere of how the officers are dominant and sort of taking the situation into their control, as the helpless child is perceived as smaller through perspective yet also acts as a metaphor for him being “smaller” in terms of power.

Similar to the this, The Tramp comes in and stand next to the assistant. The placement of the actors here creates another dynamic situation by placing the assistant right between The Tramp and the officer, this sort of gives even more power to the officer (as a first class citizen) and creates even more distance with The Tramp who is a poor, lower class citizen.

In this scene, I think the use of space, props and movement creates an effective short chase scene. There’s a strong division of the two groups through the choice of costume design (baggy, worn out clothes for Jack and The Tramp, well fitting and clean clothing for the Orphan Aslyum). The quick and almost exaggerated movements of the actors and the use of the prop (the hammer) make this scene snappy and exciting.

Parallel editing was used to cut to the entrance of the apartment for the assistant to get help, this creates a sense of time and space throughout the scene.

At the end of this scene, we see Jack being thrown into the truck and taken away. In terms of acting, Jackie Coogan use of body language and strong expression makes this scene very emotionally powerful. Chaplin decided to shoot from a side angle so you see him looking at The Tramp as he screams and begs for his father. In terms of composition, Jack is placed right at the centre of the shot to put more attention on him as he is the main character of the scene.

Chaplin could entertain the audience raising continuous laughter because of his bold ways, with no sound which is fascinating; not many people can do that. Even though his films were black and white he put a lot of colour into everyone’s life. Charlie Chaplin was a man with many talents and despite his rough childhood, he striven to become the legend he is today.

Star Study

Adam Richard Sandler was born September 9, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York, to Judith (Levine), a teacher at a nursery school, and Stanley Alan Sandler, an electrical engineer. He is of Russian Jewish descent. At 17, he took his first step towards becoming a stand-up comedian when he spontaneously took the stage at a Boston comedy club. He found he was a natural comic. He nurtured his talent while at New York University (graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1991) by performing regularly in clubs and at universities. During his freshman year, he snagged a recurring role as the Huxtable family’s friend Smitty on The Cosby Show (1984). While working at a comedy club in L.A., he was “discovered” by Dennis Miller, who recommended him to Saturday Night Live(1975) producer Lorne Michaels and told him that Sandler had a big talent. This led to his being cast in the show in 1990, which he also wrote for in addition to performing. After Saturday Night Live (1975), Sandler went on to the movies, starring in such hit comedies as Airheads (1994), Happy Gilmore (1996), Billy Madison (1995) and Big Daddy (1999). He has also starred in Mr. Deeds (2002) alongside Winona RyderEight Crazy Nights(2002), an animated movie about the Jewish festival of Chanukah; and Punch-Drunk Love(2002). He also writes and produces many of his own films and has composed songs for several of them, including The Wedding Singer (1998). Sandler has had several of his songs placed on the “Billboard” charts, including the classic “The Chanukah Song

His quotes he said about his life “I wasn’t a kid growing up thinking, “One day, I’ll get an Oscar and make a speech.” That wasn’t on my mind. I want to just do the best work I can do. To be honest with you, when I got into this I never thought about reviews. I never thought about what people would say about me. I was just a young guy who was excited to become a comedian and an actor and I just wanted to get to do what I got to do.”

Most people love comedy, that’s mainly why Adam chandler is the iconic movie star well known for his funny entertainment. He was born on 9th September 1966 aged 52 years now Also, he has made $41 million in 2015 alone, thanks to the big-budget movie “Pixels,” as well as four exclusive movies he has contracted to make with Netflix, including: The week of, The ridiculous 6, The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler. Adam Sandler’s net worth is estimated at $340 million.

He produced as a voice over in a animated movie called Hotel Transylvania 3,  that got the kids attention where of course he was awarded Kids’ Choice. Award for Favorite Movie Actor.

About the only way to tell whether an actor is a success is if he keeps starring in the same kind of movie, the movies don’t offer anything spectacular in the way of special effects or story and yet the audience keeps buying tickets. Where he was staring in the second movie Hotel Transylvania 2 earning $169,700,110.

Sandler enjoys a high salary as a reward for the hundreds of millions in profits he has made for his employers, in particular Sony Pictures, which usually releases his broad comedies. But some other actors have never done what Sandler has done; carried a film to profitability, let alone done it a dozen times.

I have to say my favourite film of his is Jack and Jill released in November 11th 2011, is an Americian comedy film directed by Dennis Dugan. Its about a character  Jack who Adam plays; an extra advertising  hassled family guy very whose goofy, along with his embarrassing twin sister Jill has come to stay for the holidays that is, Thanksgiving, which is the most hilarious Thanksgiving I’ve ever seen i laughed so hard i couldn’t laugh no more. The films buget was 79 million, where the box office made 149.7 million.

Jack and Jill received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics, and is considered by some to be one of the worst films ever made which i totally disagree on. It was nominated for worst actor and worst actress for Sandler, and “won” 10 total awards.

Film Noir

What Makes the film Noir distinctive among American cinema?

This was designed so people can relate during the hard times of the Depression and World War which made it even more appealing.   The Film Noir genre generally refers to a dark mystery and crime drama produced from the early 1940s to the late 1950s.   Movies of this genre were characteristically shot in black and white and featured stories involving femmes fatales, heroes or anti-heroes, and tough, cynical protagonists and, detectives. The definition of a Femmes Fatale is an attractive and seductive woman, especially one who will ultimately cause distress to a man who becomes involved with her tries to achieve her hidden purpose by using her tack ticks. In some situations, she uses lies or blackmailing rather than kindness.

There has been a debate whenever Film Noir is a genre or a style, as its considered to have both; the style of film making characterised by such elements as cynical heroes, striking lighting effects, frequent use of flashbacks, complicated plots, and a freedom of choice. The genre was commonly mostly in American crime dramas of the World War.

The Lightning affect in a film noir scene involves more than just adding light to the film. In film noir, lighting is used to create shadows and give the viewer a sense that danger lurks just around the corner. As such, lighting in a scene is the most powerful elements in film noir photography.

Using a gobo allows you to fake elements of a shot. If you can't get a live person to serve as your menacing shadow, a little creativity with some poster board and scissors or a matt knife can give you the same effect.

The tips are is to add dimension to your shots by lighting them from the side instead of the front. That way, it varies intensity across the person or object. For example to the side-lighting rule. For example, if you’re capturing a crime suspect during an interrogation, you might use a bright light directly on the suspect’s face or straight down onto the suspect, leaving the rest of the room in black. The interrogation room actually a crime drama setting. This variation adds dimension to the subject, creating the depth that’s missing from front-lit shots.Where as from the front, its seen to be also flat, lacking depth in relation to the setting. As light the front are too bright and easy to see. Besides choosing where to place lights, the type of lights you choose can make a big difference.

The iconography objects such as cigarettes, lighters, shutter blinds, trench coats, alcohol, neon lights, red lipsticks, pistols and other visuals are linked to noir genre. The typical location, of a noir film, is normally set in abandoned areas, such as warehouses, alleyways, empty streets. Darkness, gloom and fog are normally associated with film noir aswell, giving a mysterious and dangerous feeling. Jazz music to give the film an edge of sophistication but mystery aswell. The theme of the film sets the movie in motion and allows the audience to grasp what the movie is going to be about. Greed, love, betrayal, jealousy, lust, revenge, corruption, murder, sex, justice.

These are the examples and memorable films of the film noir such as: Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, The Maltese Falcon ,The Big Sleep, Touch of Evil, The Third Man, Rififi from the early 1940’s.

Realism ‘Fish Tank’

This movie ‘Fish Tank’ released in 2009, is a bold new entry in the long-standing British tradition of distressing social realism;e realist youth drama about a girl from the British underclass who enjoys dancing and other stuff.  Working in British lower-class realism, still finds astounding moments of association in Mia’s life.

Social Realism is a film genre which focuses on giving the audience a true indication of what life is like to draw attention to the real social-inside conditions of the working class. From this interpretation of real life came ‘social realism’, this genre does not document and present real life in the same way as documentary films do, they set out to create reality in a certain way, even though the story could be completely invented there would be a dominant sense of reality within facing social obstacles that people relate to.

This is achieved by the techniques such as: location shooting, hand held cameras, local specific actors, themes, plots and working class subject.

The film is set on a neglected estate in Essex and is filmed on location; most of the events surrounded block of flats that fifteen-year-old Mia lives with her careless dysfunctional family. This very contained location not only allows a very realistic image of what life is like for the people living in this particular area it also sets the audience that this is going to be a film about yearning for escape, the cause of the family that some people can also relate to. This is even presented clearly in the film’s opening scene as we see Mia in an abandoned flat, dancing in front of the window where we can see out into the horizon ‘Every day she skips school to creep into an empty flat and plug into an alternative reality through headphones and fierce, intricately demanding hip hop moves’.

In Fish Tank it could be perceived as the ‘angry young women’ , or young women who seem to be rebelling against the problems of society. Mia is an independent young girl who seems to find herself in dilemmas a lot of the time, struggling stay in school. The first impression we get of Mia is this mouthy, obnoxious teen that goes looking for trouble, for example when she causes conflict with the other girls on the estate one of the very first scene, however throughout the film we see Mia’s character go on a difficult journey. This relates to young people how their judged on their behaviours and appearance little people know they could be suffering inside, the cause of family, abuse, especially society. Like many girls today Mia is looking for escape through show business and through her dancing in addition many girls just like Mia in Britain are striving to achieve this dream encouraged by their idols. It would have been very easy and predictable for the director to have produced a happy ending for Mia, to achieve her dream of being a dancer. However reality hits us when the audition that Mia has been working so hard towards is for a tacky strip club.

Mia and her younger sister Tyler are clear examples of the rebellious children often shown in the film to be drinking, smoking and swearing or in some way getting into problems. However it is not just the children in Fish Tank who seem to have this lifestyle but the mother has abandoned her parental responsibilities, by drinking and partying and bringing random men into the family home, therefore she is not a positive role model for her children, for this reason it is expected that Mia and Tyler behaviour is abnormal from looking at their mother. This is a concept of a breakdown in family relations also links to the idea of how adults behaviour are what influences their children to behave in a manner.

The technique the film uses is a hand held camera is used throughout the film giving us Mia’s point of view at all times. This is a very interesting characteristic of Fish Tank, we never see any of the other characters on their own, everything is seen from Mia’s perspective, this in itself gives this idea of reality, in a way the viewer is placed 1st person as the character of Mia. We can only see the emotions and reactions of the other characters. if she does and this also gives the film an uncertain quality as we never really know the full story only Mia’s side of it,  giving a sense of mystery. It also gives the film its pace where there are no  prolonged lingering, complicated camera shots everything is shot in different genre styles.

Fish Tank also maintain to the social realist tradition of using unknown actors to produce the cast, especially the main protagonist ‘Katie Jarvis’ who plays Mia who was discovered by the director Andrea Arnold in a railway station after overhearing Jarvis having an argument with her boyfriend. The director wanted real people in her cast to give the film a very brassy authentic representation of life on an Essex estate; whereas if the had professional actors have learned professional characteristics to their work this would make characters less authentic, as when watching the movie the audience would think about recognising them from another film. I like the way that was not the aim of this film because it’s unique, the characters are not meant to be larger than life. Overall Mia makes some bad choices and learns that adults often are no better than teenagers at doing the right thing. Mia just learns it in a harsher way than most youths do.

Film Auteur Spike Lee (Do the right Thing)

Spike Lee is a phenomenal producer, director, writer and actor he creates provocative films as a film auteur that explore race relations, political issues and urban crime and violence. His films include ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ and ‘Do the Right Thing.’

Born in Shelton Jackson Lee on March 2nd 1957, in Atlanta Georgia. He produced amateur films by age 20. Lee produced his own film called, ‘She’s Gotta Have It’, its one of the most profitable films made in 1986 and he continues to create films that explore often takes a perspective at race relations, political issues and urban crime and violence provocative topics like politics, race, and violence. Lee became a director of his first film. The film was made in two weeks the value is $175,000 to create. made more than $7 million at the box office, making it one of the most profitable films created in 1986. Do the Right Thing, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The film ‘Do the Right Thing’ is mainly about racial tension and police taking unnecessary action on black people. This film intrigued many people enough to be in theatres in the summer of 1989. Having inspiration from a Malcolm X quote, Do the Right Thing. Spike Lee has put together a tremendous cast for this movie, that includes many actors that now are big in the movie industry, people such as Samuel L. Jackson, John Turturro and Martin Lawrence. Spike Lee, Danny Aiello, John Turturro, and Richard Edson in 'Do the Right Thing' (1989)

The film was actually inspired by a real incident that happened on December 19, 1986, four black men were travelling when their car broke down. They walked three miles to the most known Italian-American Howard Beach neighbourhood of Queens, New York, where they got into conflict with some white teenagers before heading to New Park Pizzeria for a meal. When they left the café they were approach by a larger group of white men, including the ones they’d come across earlier. Two of the black men were beaten; the other one tried to run but was chased where he was hit by a car and killed. This was one of the memorable moment of film.

Bill Nunn in 'Do the Right Thing' (1989)

There were different types of sound in the movie. The music that was placed into scenes ideally completed the message it meant to get across in three basic categories of sound (dialogue, sound effects, and music). Dialogue consists of the characters simply speaking to one another. Superior dialogue in a film comes off as natural conversation between characters. For example, there’s a part in the film where Spike Lee playing Mookie and John Tuturro playing Pino have a candid dialogue about race in the pizza shop. This is a very powerful scene because it brings revelation to Pino’s character and at the same time shows the sympathy Mookie has for Pino’s incompatible feelings towards African Americans.

A scene from 'Do the Right Thing' (1989)

Usually its difficult to find shots that don’t feature the colour red. Furthermore it’s one of the most spectacular techniques of the movie is how powerfully I feel the sense of the heat of the summer day. Colour was the his most important tool in transferring the temperature to the screen. His film has a warm range of yellows, reds, earth tones, amber but added less blues and greens, which have a cooling effect. The rule of red extended to costuming, set design, and props, which is why almost every scene has at least one red element in it.

The best thing one can say for Lee is that he takes risks, like all true artists. For unlike most of today’s film makers, he’s not afraid to really challenge a movie audience to do some serious thinking. This is a movie that wisely deprives you of the inside reality of what Americas like from the characters perspective.
